DIY Rustic Wood Top Dresser (Ikea Hack)

I cannot begin to tell you how long I have been in the market for a cute rustic wood topped dresser. They are just SO expensive to purchase though! After being inspired by a few Pinterest posts, I decided it was time to create my own using some leftover pallets in my backyard. The dresser itself was from Ikea and cost me $150, but the wood was FREE and the additional stain and pull updates (which are optional) only cost me around $15 in total! I don’t know about you, but I definitely prefer to spend $175 on a rustic dresser instead of upwards of $400! If you’re up for the challenge too, I’ll show you how to do it!

How To Make A Rustic Wood Top Dresser with Pallets

I started with this… Which took a while to assemble. So, put aside a solid chunk of weekend if you’ll be assembling your own dresser!

What You’ll Need:

Tools
Miter Saw
Nail Gun
Sander/Sandpaper
Materials
Dresser
Pallets
Wood Glue
Stain
Drawer Pulls

The Steps:

1. Prior to assembling your dresser (or if you already have an assembled dresser), you’ll want to take the solid wood piece off the top. This makes it easier for measuring, cutting, and nailing the boards to your dresser.

2. Lay out your wood pieces to figure out the best pattern. I chose to offset each row.

3. Start by attaching the longer, full size pieces to your dresser. It will help you to figure out the best cuts for your smaller pieces. Use wood glue AND nails for a tight bond.

4. Once the larger pieces are attached, fill in the blanks! Place smaller pieces in the gaps and make cuts with your miter saw based on how they measure up.

5. Again, use wood glue and nails to attach these smaller pieces.

6. Once all of the pieces are attached, allow time to dry, and then sand down any rough edges.

7. Assemble the rest of your dresser (clearly, Titan did all of the work).

8. Once assembled, stain the dresser (you can stain before assembling, but I chose to stain after to make sure all visible parts were covered).

9. Replace all of those boring pulls with fun ones! I got mine at Target for $10!

10. Place your belongings (or gigantic TV – I do love me some Netflix) back on the dresser once it is dry.

What do you think? Do I pass the knockoff test?

  • Oh I love the rustic top! I've made a new wooden too for my ikea laptop stand in the past, but I never thought cheap pallets would look so good. Lovely!
