Shed-Shop Series: How To Build A Shed & Turn It Into A Workshop
This past spring, my parents sold my childhood home, which meant I was left without a workshop as my workshop was in a shed in their backyard… and since I live in studio apartment, I was stranded without a place to run my business or build projects! So, this summer my dad and I partnered up with my incredible friends at The Home Depot to build a 12×12 shed from a DIY Shed Kit and turn that shed into my new workshop. Welcome to the first blog post in my Shed-Shop Series – How to Build a Shed!
As someone who has a passion for woodworking, but doesn’t have access to a garage or commercial space, a shed was a great option for creating a shop space. Even better, I’m sharing how we tackled our shed build in hopes of showing you how tangible it is to create your very own home workshop in your backyard shed!
Over the next few weeks, I will be sharing different parts of my shed build with tutorials and insight! Welcome to part one of my Shed-Shop Series – How To Build A Shed!
How To Build A Shed
Since we were on a really tight timeline for this build, The Home Depot partnered up with me to provide me with a 12×12 Handy Home Products Shed Kit to get my build started as soon as possible. The kit came with all of the pre-cut pieces needed for the project as well as step-by-step instructions and all of the hardware required for the build.
In order to make the process easier to digest, we broke the main portion of the shed build into three separate parts, and I am grouping them all into one post to make it easier to digest!
You can find the full list of materials and tools used for each portion of this build in the description of the videos on my YouTube channel!
Step 1: Building A Shed Foundation
To get started, we had to level the land a build a foundation based on what we were allowed to by code. You can check out the full video and the details on the foundation we chose and why on my YouTube channel!
Step 2: How To Assemble A DIY Shed Kit
Once the foundation was sturdy, my dad and I started the shed kit build. The entire build (including the foundation) took us about three days to complete! We broke down all of the steps in my second episode on my YouTube channel as well!
Step 3: How To Shingle A Shed Roof
Once the shed was built, we wanted to take care of shingling the roof as soon as possible. So, we set aside a day (which unfortunately happened to be the hottest day of the year), and just got it done. Here’s how we did it!
Since the rest of the build was completely custom, I’ll be breaking down those projects into individual blog posts over the next few weeks along with more video tutorials.
In the meantime, please check out my first three videos and let me know what you think! Can’t wait to get back into the shop and share some more projects very soon!

3 years agoMy name is Julia Jones I’m 19 and I am a certified welder. In the past, I’ve mostly worked for company’s who do structural welding. I decided I wanted more than welding the same 5 things all day, so I’m looking into getting a shed that I can put in my backyard so I can run my own business. I just wanted to thank you for sharing such a helpful video, I would love to talk to you more!
