Winter is right around the corner, and now’s the perfect time to get your home ready before the cold sets in. A little prep now can save you from expensive repairs and a lot of stress later.

1. Inspect and Seal Windows & Doors
Gaps around windows and doors can make your heating system work overtime and who wants to pay extra for heating? I like to take a little bit of time in the Fall to check for air leaks around window frames and thresholds.
You can use caulk to seal small cracks, and install weatherstripping for a tighter seal if needed.
2. Clean Gutters and Downspouts
Once the leaves have fallen down, grab your ladder and clear out those gutters.
Clogged gutters trap moisture, which can lead to ice dams, roof damage, and water seeping into your home. No thank you!
3. Service Your Heating System
Before you flip on that thermostat, it’s a great idea to give your heating system some love. Replace the air filter, vacuum the vents, and have a professional tune-up done if it’s been a while.
If you rely on a fireplace or wood stove, make sure the chimney is clean and free of buildup. You’ll be glad you did once those chilly nights hit.
4. Protect Outdoor Plumbing & Hoses
Frozen pipes can be one of winter’s worst surprises. Make sure you disconnect and drain your garden hoses, and shut off any exterior water lines. Adding foam insulation sleeves to any exposed pipes in your garage or crawlspace is also a great idea.
This is one of those quick weekend projects that can prevent a major headache later. If you have a sprinkler system and you’re not sure how to drain it, call in an expert, there’s nothing wrong with that!
5. Check Your Roof and Attic
Your roof and attic play a big role in keeping your home warm and dry. Check for missing shingles, damaged flashing, or other areas where water might get in.
Sealant can repair small gaps but if you notice more than that you may want to call in a professional.
From the inside, check your attic insulation and make sure your vents aren’t blocked. Good insulation keeps heat where it belongs (inside your home) which will help prevent ice dams on your roof.
