DIY Upholstered Bench

April 30, 2021April 30, 2021 Sam Leave a comment
DIY Upholstered Bench

I recently partnered up with my insanely talented friend DIY Danie to partake in a thrift-flip challenge where we each sent a box filled with items that were thrifted from our own homes! Well, one of the items that Danie sent me was a large roll of blue velvet fabric, and I knew that I had to make a bench from it! This project only took me one weekend to create and was so much fun to make come to life!

How To Make A DIY Upholstered Bench

This project is sponsored by Arrow Fasteners. For my full sponsorship and disclosure policy, click here.

Did you catch my thrift flip video with Danie!? If not, make sure to check it out on YouTube & subscribe to my channel!

There are so many things I love about this project. First, it only took me ONE WEEKEND to make! Second, it was my first time ever tufting furniture! I used an awesome tutorial from my friend Pneumatic Addict which made no-sew tufting a breeze! Third, it was SO easy to make thanks to my friends at Arrow Fasteners and their line of cordless tools!

Want to see how I made this project come to life? Let’s do it!

What I Used:

Tools
Miter Saw
Table Saw/Circular Saw
Drill/Driver
Arrow Fastener E21 Cordless Electric Staple Gun
Pocket Hole Jig
Sander/Sandpaper
Scissors
Wood Clamps
Utility Knife
Button Making Kit
Safety Goggles
Pencil
Tape Measure
Carpenter’s Square

Materials
(4) 1 x 2 x 6′ Boards
(1) 2 x 2 x 8′ Boards
(1) ½ Sheet ¾” Plywood
Fabric
Batting
3″ Upholstery Foam
3/8″ Staples
1 ¼” Pocket Hole Screws
Wood Glue
Spray Adhesive
Wood Stain (I Used This One)
Polyurethane

The Steps:

1. First, I cut my pieces into the following lengths on my miter saw:

2 x 2’s
(4) Legs @ 16″

1 x 2’s
(2) Long Sides @ 29″
(2) Short Sides @ 13″
(6) Supports @ 12 ¼”

… I also decided to taper my 2 x 2 legs on my table saw, but this is optional.

2. Next, I drilled pocket holes in the end of each of the 1 x 2 pieces of lumber and I then assembled all of my pieces together using pocket hole screws and wood glue. I made sure to inset the frame pieces about ¾” deep on the legs to add some depth to the frame.

4. Next, I sanded, stained, and sealed the bench base.

5. Next, I cut a plywood baker board with my circular saw to create the bottom of my bench cushion.

6. I then cut and attached my 3″ foam to the backer board using spray adhesive and added a layer of batting, following by my fabric and attached them to the plywood using my Arrow Fastener E21 Cordless Electric Staple Gun and 3/8″ staples. Using a cordless staple gun made making this cushion an absolute breeze. I was able to attach all of the fabric in one charge, and save my hands from a lot of agony!

7. Once the cushion was complete, I added tufted buttons using Pneumatic Addict’s tufting trick and some custom made buttons!

8. Last step was to attach the cushion to the bench with wood screws from the underside!

That’s it!

I am so excited about the way this bench turned out! I would have never used this gorgeous blue velvet fabric on my own, so I am so grateful for Danie for sending it my way!

This was a super fun project that was so easy to tackle thanks to my friends at Arrow Fasteners!
