I recently got a chance to renovate my parent’s guest room and turn it into a combination guest space and home office for my mom. But, with work from home culture still going strong, my dad was feeling a bit bummed that his space was so cluttered. So, to help him out I tackled a DIY mudroom & home office makeover to give him a space to work too! Here’s how I made it happen!

To give you guys an idea of what this space looked like before…
it was a hot mess. My dad shares his office with an unofficial mudroom-type spot that tends to be a catchall for a lot of stuff.
But, no worries… because after some creative building, here’s what it looks like now!
To give my dad a streamlined space to work, I build him an l-shaped desk (you can find the build details for that here)!
I also built a custom mudroom storage system with a floating bench to give my family space to still store their outdoor items and shoes! I made this custom storage system using ¾” birch plywood and created my floating bench the same way I created my floating desk!
And that accent wall!? I was feeling super inspired by my friends at Urban Wall Design and their incredible work! So, I channeled that energy into this accent wall (here’s a similar project I made with the same technique)!
As a weekend warrior, I had to juggle this transformation with my full time job. But, luckily, The Home Depot made that a breeze with their in-store pickup options. I just ordered what I needed for this project online or via The Home Depot app and was able to pick it up from the store on my way to my parents’ each build day! I was also able to calculate how much paint I needed for this entire project, which means way less wasted paint!
