Cleaning Pet Messes At Home

spot cleaning couches

I love my little dudes, but anyone who has a furry family member at home knows how messy they can be! To make things even more complicated, groomers have been closed here for a while, which means that my mini huskies are big-husky stinky. But, hiring a pro to clean pet messes could cost upwards of $100 per room. So, to combat that extra cost, I partnered up with Hoover to show how easy it is to clean up pet messes and odors at home without hiring help!

Furry family members are literally the best. But, they can be so messy (and so, so stinky)… and while there isn’t a ton of carpet space in my family’s home, but there are lots of area rugs and comfortable places to lay (see example 1)…

This means that there are also a lot of spots soaking up the amazingness of that “my-dog-just-rolled-in-the-grass” smell. Yes, even though the huskies are mini, they often smell like normal sized huskies.

Owning a Carpet Cleaner vs. Renting vs. Hiring.

To help combat the quarantine smells coming from the minis, I recently looked into how much it would cost to professionally clean pet messes on the couches and rugs in the house, and was quoted at a minimum of $100 per room… did I mention there are 2 couches, 3 large area rugs, a staircase, and a hallway to clean? Yikes. Renting is an option too, but I’ll be honest… these boys get into trouble a lot.

The good news is that you don’t have to hire a professional or rent a temporary unit to get rid of pet odors and stains. I recently partnered up with my friends at Hoover to try out their HOOVER SmartWash PET Complete Automatic Carpet Cleaner and I’m honestly hooked on deep cleaning every upholstered surface in the house. It costs half of what I was quoted for a professional to come clean ($299.99 at the time of this post), and it lives in the front closet now for when we need to clean a pet mess on the spot.

Why Should I Deep Clean My Rugs?

Besides the fact that pet odors can be deep rooted in upholstry, the CDC recommends that to clean carpeted floor, rugs and drapes, consumers should “clean the surface using soap and water or with cleaners appropriate for use on these surfaces.” So, vacuuming really isn’t enough!

How Do I Use A Carpet Cleaner?

The good news about a carpet cleaner like this one is that it’s super easy to use. You literally just add water to the water chamber, add a Hoover cleaning solution to the solution chamber, press the power button, push the vacuum forward to wash the carpet, and pull it back to dry. You can even press a button to throw it in a “dry only” mode to help pull extra moisture from the carpet after washing.

What If I Just Have To Wash A Small Spot?

Don’t have an area rug or carpeted living room to wash? No sweat! The HOOVER SmartWash PET Complete Automatic Carpet Cleaner comes with a Spot Chaser Pretreat Spray Wand and FlexForce™ PET PowerBrushes to remove ground-in dirt and smells from carpets, stairs and upholstery.

If your pups are like mine, they also love hanging on the couch. But, luckily investing in a carpet cleaner with a wand makes cleaning those easy as well.

In fact, it is impossible to remove odor or pet messes from any carpet by using a normal vacuum cleaner, but a carpet cleaner can do it easily.
